Known internationally for its spectacular landscapes, rich Sasak and Sumbawanese cultures, world-class events and warm hospitality, NTB has also developed a strong reputation as one of Indonesia’s leading Muslim-friendly destinations.
But Muslim-Friendly Tourism in NTB is not simply about being a place where Muslims can travel.
It is about creating a destination where faith, culture, nature, hospitality and modern tourism can exist comfortably together.
Accessibility is particularly important for Muslim travellers because a comfortable journey is not only about reaching the destination — it is also about being able to find essential services along the way.
For Muslim visitors, prayer and worship facilities create an experience where spirituality does not need to be separated from travel.
One of the great pleasures of travelling through Lombok and Sumbawa is discovering local cuisine with confidence.
Accommodation and facilities that are useful for Muslim travelers, such as prayer spaces, qibla information, halal food options and appropriate bathroom facilities.
The province has developed a regulatory foundation specifically supporting halal tourism.
Among the important milestones are Governor Regulation No. 51 of 2015 on Halal Tourism and Regional Regulation No. 2 of 2016 on Halal Tourism.
The latter provides a framework covering various elements of halal tourism, including destinations, accommodation, food and beverage businesses, travel agencies and tour guides.
The regulation also recognizes the importance of collaboration between government institutions and tourism stakeholders, including tourism associations, religious institutions, businesses and local communities.
This is important because Muslim-friendly tourism cannot be created by a single hotel, restaurant or attraction.
It requires an ecosystem.
From airports and hotels to restaurants, destinations, transportation, tour operators, guides, shopping centres and local communities — every part of the visitor journey contributes to the experience.
NTB’s Muslim-friendly tourism journey has received significant recognition.
Lombok was ranked as Indonesia’s leading halal tourism destination in the Indonesia Muslim Travel Index (IMTI) 2019, achieving a score of 70 — the highest among the ten Indonesian destinations evaluated that year. The assessment used the ACES framework: Access, Communication, Environment and Services.
NTB also achieved the top position as Indonesia’s Muslim-Friendly Tourism Destination in IMTI 2023.
More recently, in IMTI 2025, NTB was recognized among Indonesia’s five best Muslim-friendly tourism destinations and received a Special Recognition Award for Setting a Global Benchmark in Muslim Friendly Tourism and Sport.
These recognitions are more than awards.
They reflect a continuing effort to develop the destination through infrastructure, services, human resources, halal certification and collaboration between government, businesses and local communities.
