Merarik is the initial ritual in the sequence of a traditional Sasak wedding. During this stage, the prospective groom is required to “kidnap” his beloved and take her to the house of a close relative. Uniquely, this elopement is highly consensual and planned secretly by the couple, strictly without the knowledge of the bride’s parents or family. For the Sasak people, taking a girl away to marry her is considered much more honorable and chivalrous than formally proposing at her parents’ house.

History and Philosophy of Merarik:

Historically, there are two primary perspectives on the origins of Merarik. The first argues that this tradition is an authentic, ancient practice created by the Sasak ancestors. Meanwhile, the second perspective suggests it is a result of cultural assimilation from the era when the Balinese kingdom ruled over Lombok.

Additionally, a popular folklore ties this tradition to a legendary king’s contest. The king challenged men to “kidnap” his heavily guarded daughter, declaring that the successful man would earn the right to marry the princess.

Despite the extreme connotation of the word “kidnapping”, Merarik carries a profound philosophy. Ultimately, this process aims to forge a deep bond of mutual respect and solidify the relationship between the two uniting families.

Stages of the Merarik Tradition

The elopement process must strictly follow customary laws. If not done according to proper procedures, the bride’s family may feel disrespected, and the groom will face social backlash. The complete stages are as follows:

Merarik (The Elopement):
The groom secretly takes the bride away at night. This process must be done quietly to avoid any commotion. If a disturbance occurs, the attempt is considered a failure, and the groom is penalized with a customary fine.

Sejati Selabar:
The following day, the groom’s side, through their local hamlet chief, formally informs the bride’s hamlet chief. The purpose is to notify the bride’s family that their daughter has been “kidnapped,” is safe, and is ready for marriage.

Nuntut Wali:
A few days later, envoys from the groom’s side meet with the bride’s family to request their willingness to act as guardians (wali) for the religious marriage ceremony (akad nikah).

Sorong Serah Aji Krame:
This is the core of the customary handover. Sorong serah signifies witnessing, aji means value, and krame stands for dignity. Attended by religious and community leaders, this stage officially validates the couple’s new social status in the community.

Nyongkolan:
This is the highly anticipated grand celebration. The newlyweds are dressed like a king and queen and paraded in a festive procession to the bride’s residence. This parade is usually accompanied by traditional Gendang Beleq music, and participants proudly wear traditional Sasak clothing.

Mbale Ones Nae:
The wedding series concludes with a reciprocal gathering between the two families. It is a moment dedicated to seeking mutual forgiveness and strengthening family ties (silaturahmi).

Ultimately, Merarik is more than a traditional wedding ritual. It is a reflection of how the Sasak people understand love, dignity, family, and community. Behind each stage lies a set of values passed down through generations, making Merarik an important part of Sasak cultural heritage and one of the traditions that gives Lombok its distinctive character. It is a culture that is not merely meant to be observed, but to be understood through the stories, customs, and everyday lives of the people who keep it alive.

For travelers, discovering Merarik offers a chance to experience Lombok from a more personal and human perspective. This is the essence of down-to-earth tourism—not simply visiting beautiful places, but meeting local people, listening to their stories, and appreciating the traditions that shape their way of life. Merarik is just one thread in the rich cultural tapestry of the Sasak people, which in turn forms part of Indonesia’s extraordinary cultural diversity. To experience Lombok, therefore, is not only to see a destination, but to connect with the people, traditions, and stories that give the island its soul.

The post Discovering Merarik: The Meaningful ‘Elopement’ Tradition of the Sasak Tribe in Lombok appeared first on Lombok Sumbawa Tourism.
