Bayan Beleq Ancient Mosque is the most iconic religious, cultural, and ancient historical destination in North Lombok Bayan Village, Bayan District, North Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara. It beautifully blends the early traces of Islamic civilization with traditional Sasak architecture. Access to this site is very easy since it is located right on the edge of the main northern Lombok ring road tourism route. The 1.5-hectare cultural heritage complex sits on a small hilly area. Upon arrival, visitors are immediately greeted by the landscape of traditional Sasak stilt houses (kampu) and lush, shady trees all around.

What to See and Experience

  1. Ancient Architecture
    A square 9 x 9 meter building featuring woven bamboo walls (gedek), a double-tiered roof made of knitted bamboo slats (atap santek), and a clay floor covered with woven reed mats.
  2. 4 Main Pillars (Saka Guru)
    The original 16th-century cylindrical jackfruit wood pillars inside the main hall that firmly support the roof structure.
  3. 6 Sacred Tomb Domes (Cungkup)
    A cluster of tombs belonging to early Islamic propagation leaders (such as the Tomb of Gaus Abdul Razak) that surround the main mosque building.
  4. The Grandeur of Mulud Adat Bayan
    An annual ritual festival (featuring traditional processes like the mass rice-thumping Menutu and the Bisoq Menik rice-washing ritual) joined by thousands of indigenous people dressed in traditional attire.

Tips for Tourists

Mandatory Traditional Sarong:
Visitors are required to wear a long traditional woven sarong and a headscarf (sapuk for men) to enter the site. Sarong rentals are available at the entrance gate for a voluntary fee (around IDR 10,000).

Menstruation Restriction:
Women who are currently menstruating are strictly prohibited from entering the inner courtyard or the main building to preserve the sanctity of the sacred area.

Special Function of the Mosque:
This ancient mosque is not used for daily five-time prayers by the locals in order to protect and preserve the physical structure. It is only opened for major religious holidays or traditional customs.

Respect Photography Rules:
Please ask for permission from the guide or custom elders (Toaq Lokak) before taking photos of the detailed interior or shooting inside the main building.
